Dynamic excitation of sperm cells: characterization and motion control

MSc assignment

In this project, we will develop biohybrid magnetic microrobots by electrostatic self-assembly of non-motile sperm cells and magnetic nanoparticles. These microrobots will be actuated by external magnetic fields to exert magnetic torque on their dipole moment. This magnetic torque generates bending travelling waves along the flagellum and enables propulsion in a medium.

Tasks:

  • Dynamic excitation of sperm cells using electromagnetic coils and microscopic feedback
  • Characterization of the bending stiffness of the organic body based on the measured wave forms of the flagellum
  • Modeling of the sperm cells and validation of the numerical model based on experimental results
  • Motion control of dead sperm cells using external magnetic fields
