3D printed electrothermal actuators

MSc assignment

3D printing of structures with plastics and carbon fibres enables printing of electrically conductive structures. Compared to carbon (black or graphene) doped plastics the carbon fibres boast low resistance and therefore can be used to make devices such as actuators. In combination with conductive structures for sensing this opens possibilities to make actuators with built in sensors which can be used as feedback in controlled actuators. This assignment will investigate the 3D print technology and process and possible design strategies. It will have materials, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and control aspects where the emphasis in the project may be tailored to the student's background.
