3D printed personalized insole for measuring ground reaction forces

MSc assignment

Manufacturing of 3D printed insoles with integrated ferroelectret force sensors with the scope of measuring vertical ground reaction forces (GRF). The insole design is tailored to the subject wearing them by employing a 3D scan of the subject’s sole. The ferroelectret force sensors made from Polypropylene (PP) and conductive Thermoplastic urethane (TPU) are integrated in a foaming TPU insole and printed in one go using commercially available filaments and a commercially available 3D printer.

The insole will offer a pressure map that is used to split the total GRF estimated by an IMU on the pelvis. Validation of the insoles will be done by comparison with an instrumented treadmill and optical motion tracking system in a biomechanics lab.
