AR-MoCap: Augmented Reality Motion Tracking System

MSc assignment

Background

Augmented Reality (AR) offers innovative possibilities for real-time visualisation and interaction with motion data. Integrating motion tracking with AR can revolutionise applications in healthcare, sports, and education by providing intuitive feedback and enhancing user experience. Developing such systems requires expertise in motion-tracking technologies, data visualisation, and human-computer interaction.

Objective

The aim of this thesis is to design and implement an Augmented Reality Motion Tracking System capable of capturing, processing, and visualising motion data in real-time. The system will focus on accuracy, responsiveness, and user-friendly interaction, leveraging cutting-edge AR technologies.

Key Tasks

Literature Review:
Explore existing motion tracking and AR systems, focusing on hardware, algorithms, and applications.

System Design:
Define system architecture, including hardware selection (e.g., cameras, sensors) and software frameworks (e.g., Unity, ARKit/ARCore).

Motion Tracking Integration:
Develop or adapt AI-based algorithms for real-time motion tracking (e.g., skeletal tracking, pose estimation).

AR Visualisation:
Design and implement AR interfaces to overlay motion data on physical environments effectively.

Testing,  Validation and Documentation:
Evaluate system performance for accuracy, latency, and usability through controlled experiments. Provide a comprehensive report on system development, findings, and potential applications.

Expected Outcomes

A functional AR-based motion tracking prototype with validated performance metrics. Insights into the challenges and opportunities of combining AR with motion tracking for practical applications.
