Design and development of a needle-placement mechanism to minimize the number of scans during image-guided procedures

MSc assignment

The Needle Positioning System (NPS) is a mechatronic device developed at Demcon to orient the needle at the right angles to reach the target tumor. In clinical procedures, it is often required to change the insertion point after initial planning. The NPS does not allow for easy relocation of the insertion point without performing additional scans and repeating the complete procedure. This can have adverse effect on the patient and the clinician.

The goal of the project is to develop a mechanism to provide freedom to the clinician to relocate the entry point within a limited range without performing additional scans, hence reducing the time required to complete the procedure.
