Rules and Regulations for a (Semi-)Autonomous Wheelchair

Finished: 2024-02-05

BSc assignment

The only electric wheelchairs currently on the market are controlled with a joystick. For some people, even this is too difficult to use, and thus new control methods are designed. For example, the use of eye tracking, the user's voice, or facial expressions. Furthermore, AI can be used to make an autonomous or self-driving wheelchair. For these new inventions rules and regulations are necessary because the goal is to use them in public spaces.

Such a wheelchair is being developed by Abilitytech, which is making a wheelchair controlled with an eye tracker for Andrei. At the moment the wheelchair lacks an emergency stop. As the user of the wheelchair is already known the abilities of Andrei should be taken into consideration when designing a control input.
